From time to time my friend Rhiannon and I come up with little projects for each other to work on, just for the heck of it. The most recent one she suggested for me was a little boy and his dog, with a series of illustrations showing the adventurous flights of fancy the two embark on. These are the basic “real world” designs, which are intentionally a bit simplistic; this is to make them reflective of the dull nature of the everyday world, which will thus contrast strongly with the world of the imagined in the forthcoming illustrations.
Private Eye Design
I wanted to work out the design for the Private Eye in my forthcoming illustration before I dug into it, so here he is. I was looking to do something that was sleek and relatively simple, without too much extraneous information. He’d have an even simpler silhouette if I had stuck with just a suit like I had originally planned, but come on, he’s a noir-styled P.I.! He needs a trench coat.
Mermaid Sketch
Just a little something I drew for fun not too long ago. I may do a color version, though I’m working on a private-eye inspired illustration that will probably take precedence over any further work on this.
Aviator Design
Lately I’ve been wanting to focus on the type of work I really enjoy; I’ve been experimenting with lots of different approaches, but I tend to find myself pining for the styles and subjects I’m most interested in. With that in mind, I’ve begun working on a postcard to send to prospective freelance clients. It will be a subject I enjoy (early aviation), related to my website (travel), and indicative of the type of work I’m best at (bright, cutesy vector art). So I present to you the first step: the main character design! Just click on the thumbnail for the full image – it’s in the Sketchbook section as well, for future reference.
