I have written untold articles about the rise of Fortnite as the hub of the Metaverse, the great, post-internet online space that is usually seen as immersive VR in fiction like Snow Crash or Ready Player One, but in practice, will likely be built without VR at first.
Fortnite is throwing concerts, debuting movie trailers and doing endless cross promotion with superhero and action films, creating a plausible version of at least the building blocks of the Metaverse, to say nothing of Epic’s massive fortune and the Unreal Engine to expand things further. They are without question the main focus whenever anyone focuses on the idea that the Metaverse is knocking at our door, and yet I think we often miss discussing a potential rival, and to me, what seems like a missing half of a whole.
That would be GTA 5 and more specifically, GTA Online.
GTA 5 is the best-selling video game in history if you overlook lower priced hits like Tetris and Minecraft (the latter you could consider another Metaverse contender, in a sense), and the reason being is the persistent success of GTA 5 apk Online, its virtual, shared world that players have been racing around and shooting each other in for years now.Today In: Games

GTA Online is not doing any of Fortnite’s most technically impressive things. No one is playing concerts in GTA Online, no one is debuting their movie clips there. Part of free v bucks generator that could be that no, it’s not exactly the most family friendly venue, but really, technically, it’s just not possible. Fortnite is on another level with these kinds of events that pretty much no other game can match.
And yet, GTA Online has something that Fortnite is missing that I would consider a key component of the coming Metaverse: Investment.
What I mean is the process of investing in you, your avatar, in the Metaverse over a long period of time. Fortnite has the live events and branding deals that have Batman and Deadpool walking around the world, but there is no true “investment” in you, your character. Mainly because you are not a character with anything resembling stats or an inventory or power level. You are simply a collection of skins and pickaxes and gliders you have purchased or earned, all of which are purely cosmetic.
GTA Online is much, much different. If you have been playing the game for years, you have likely built yourself up into a true powerhouse crime lord, ruling over your city server with an iron fist and a vast pile of accumulated wealth. If you have invested time, years even, into GTA Online, you likely have a huge collection of properties, businesses and houses, a stable of cars, motorcycles, boats, planes, even tanks. A huge arsenal of weapons at your disposal and billions in the bank. And yes, you likely have a full closet of cosmetics so you can look as cool as you want while racing, fighting or doing whatever it is you want to do in that virtual world.
There is a sense of accomplishment here based on this investment that Fortnite does not have. Granted, these are two different types of games, and Fortnite cannot exactly have some battle royale players starting with huge arsenals and specialized vehicles, lest it unbalance that mode. And yet you can see how these are two halves of one whole. Fortnite has these crazy live events that blend the real and virtual world, and the branding deals that bring a huge collection of disparate IPs under one roof. And yet GTA Online has a sense of permanence, that you have invested in your avatar to the point where after years of play you have more than just a bunch of skins, you have true power in that world. This is also true of other games from World of Warcraft to The Sims, but GTA Online is probably the best-presented package, and certainly, these days, the most popular. It’s gotten to the point where to even catch up to current “legends” in Online, players have to be gifted their own starter set of properties and cars just so they don’t feel like too much of a scrub compared to those who have been playing for years.
